On the Federico Tesio and South American Beer

While the Coolmore Lexington is the main event as far as the Derby trail goes, the Federico Tesio is also of interest (although perhaps more for those of us who look to see some of these horses turn up at Delaware Park or Philly Park later in the year). John Servis sends out Indian Jump for Main Line Racing (I wonder whether they are my neighbors) and I am looking forward to seeing Mint Line, trained by Jimmy Jerkins. The race may throw up a Preakness contender or two.

It seems that Proud Spell is also still under Derby consideration along with Eight Belles; I can't imagine that Larry Jones wants to skip the Oaks entirely (particularly with such strong contenders) so one presumes that there's more than a little behind-the-scenes discussion going on with both owners.

But back to the Coolmore Lexington - the press has noticed Tomcito (pictured) in a big way. USA Today and the Herald-Leader both have articles on the colt that are well worth a read. Both note that the distance of the race is something of a concern, but not in the typical way we imagine this time of year - the worry is that he's a better horse at a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half than at this shorter distance. Here's hoping he wins - he's officially my horse crush at the moment (something I share with Patrick at Handride).

In any case, you have to be amused at how Google Translate renders The Jockey Club of Peru's take on his odds in the race: 'Paying contributions of proof in the ratio of 6 to 1.' (Which I read as, 'All your Tomcito are belong to us,' but that's because I am a huge, huge geek). I'm happy to take a Cusqueña for the team if it would help (although if we're talking South American beers, Brazil's Cervejaria Sudbrack is the way to go - I have a case of Eisenbahn Escura ready to go. I also highly recommend Eisenbahn Vigorosa - one of the best weizenbocks you'll find anywhere.).

Oh, and P. Val's in trouble. Again.

Never mind that -- don't forget that The First Saturday in May opens tonight!

Haha, I guess that makes me a huge geek, too, because I totally cracked up at "All your Tomcito are belong to us." Beautiful.

What do think the chances of either one of those fillies running against the boys really are? Porter seems more serious about following through with Eight Belles to me. I wouldn't mind one (or both) running, but I just don't see either one putting up a hupe performance. I would love to be completely wrong about that.
